Japan PM Faces Pressure From U.S. Over Role in Gulf Conflict
The Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, visited the United States, meeting with President Donald Trump, as they sought to maneuver the "very difficult" landscape created as a result of the war with Iran. In the meeting, President Trump urged Japan to "step up" and assist the United States in the safe passage of the Strait of Hormuz, as the Asian nations are far more reliant on the shipping route than the United States. However, the Japanese Prime Minister has a tough task ahead of him, as Japan has a pacifist constitution that allows the military to act only when there is a need for self-defense, coupled with the fact that 82% of the Japanese public oppose the war. In the meeting, President Trump made light of the situation, making a joke about the attack on Pearl Harbor, justifying the reason why the United States did not inform Japan of the operation, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury." Other issues, including trade, the $25 billion investment of Japan in the "Golden Dome" missile defense system, as well as the aggression of China towards Taiwan, were also discussed.
